The reappearance of Susan is never actually explained throughout the book. The crew made many suppositions, eventually reaching the eerie idea that that woman who came back was not actually Susan. However, once he looked like Susan and acted exactly like her, they had to apply Occam's Razor and accept the fact that that woman was Susan....
