At the time of the book, Déjà vu Overload is a serious problem for which no solution has been found, not even by the Central Algorithm. Déjà vu Overload is especially felt by older syrakis, but it can virtually affect anyone who has experienced many runs. The problem occurs when a human brain or human syraki have experienced too many runs and nothing seems to make them “interested” again, even applying immersive forgetfulness.

The person affected by it then have two options: or to allow the ethically challenging process of consciousness altering, so that he or he (or ve) can become once again “interested” in life, or to self-terminate. The problem is, to alter ones’ consciousness is no guarantee that Déjà vu Overload will not return and, when it does (which usually take some decades), the altering of consciousness will have to be even more pronounced. Eventually, it will render a person who is not guaranteed anymore to be the original person, and so this is why no more than three alteration are permitted by law.

Nonetheless, the problem still exists, which will eventually render death as the only option for the increasing number of human beings affected by it.
