The procedure was used only in extreme cases, only when the alternatives had been put out. It was usually necessary in cases of severe abuse, like victims of sexual abuse, brain damage, or as a result of psychological trauma caused by snuff runs. Theoretically, any type of psychological trauma could be removed by this procedure, the only problem were the possible collateral effects. Even though most of the time the procedure was successful, the were reported cases in medicine in which the patient lost many unrelated memories to the trauma, suffered paralysis, and even death.
